TRY A TRADE 2020

Last week, Year 9 & 10 students participated in a Try A Trade course funded by Skill Hire and the Construction Training Fund at Belmont City College.

The 15 students worked tirelessly to pave an area from the back of the Humanities building to the Ambassadors demountable which was nothing more than a sand pit and mud pond during winter.

Day 1 – involved removing at least 100mm of sand, huge tree roots, grass and rocks to prepare the area.

Day 2 – students put up guide string, filled the area with sand, compacted manually (no machines used unfortunately) and screed the area to start the paving.

Day 3 – paving commenced in the area entailing of cutting pavers to go around the curved garden bed, filling gaps with sand, cementing the edge to reinforce and generally clearing the area for the completed project.

The students engagement and work productivity was outstanding, resulting in a fantastic finished job. Overall the activity was a huge success due to great teamwork.
